Three mistakes that lose this question
- Jumping straight to your solution without establishing constraints. When you start with "I built a microservices architecture using Kubernetes," the interviewer has no idea if you over-engineered a simple problem or under-engineered a complex one. Without knowing you had 50 engineers deploying twice daily, or that you were processing 10M requests/day with 3 people, your architectural choice is just a technology name-drop that could be brilliant or cargo-culted.
- Describing alternatives you "considered" but clearly never seriously evaluated. Saying "we thought about using PostgreSQL but chose MongoDB for scalability" signals you don't understand either database, because that's not actually the tradeoff between them. Strong candidates name specific alternatives with real reasons for rejection: "We prototyped Postgres with read replicas, but replication lag was hitting 2-3 seconds under load and we needed sub-second consistency for inventory counts."
- Having zero numbers about your production system. When you can't say whether your service handles 10 requests per second or 10,000, or whether latency is 50ms or 500ms, you reveal you don't actually operate what you built. Even rough orders of magnitude matter—"thousands of QPS" and "tens of QPS" are completely different systems that justify completely different architectures, and not knowing which one you built suggests you weren't involved in real operational decisions.
The frame strong candidates use
The best answers follow a counterintuitive pattern: they spend more time on constraints and tradeoffs than on the actual solution. Weak candidates think the impressive part is the technology they used—Kafka, Kubernetes, GraphQL—but senior engineers know every technology is a tradeoff, and the engineering judgment is in matching constraints to tools. When you say "we had a small team and needed to ship fast, so we deliberately chose boring technology—Postgres, Redis, a monolith—even though we knew we'd need to break it apart later," you're demonstrating you make conscious tradeoffs rather than chasing resume-driven development. The constraint is the story; the solution is just the punchline.
Equally important: strong candidates volunteer a weakness or future change without being asked. This is counterintuitive because you're trying to impress the interviewer, but acknowledging "this design works well up to about 100k QPS but the single-leader database would become a bottleneck beyond that" proves you understand your system's boundaries. Interviewers know every system has limitations—pretending yours doesn't makes you look naive or defensive. The engineers who get hired are the ones who say "here's what I built, here's why it was right for these constraints, and here's what I'd change if the constraints shifted." That's the difference between someone who implements solutions and someone who solves problems.
